Hi,
Well I am happy to report that we have survived Christmas. Now we are preparing ourselves for new years. Christmas was really great. We spent Christmas eve with a family in our ward and a bunch other people that they had invited and they gave us the best asado of my whole mission. Then we got to stay up to watch the fire works. There were a lot of fire works. We were on our roof and some guy started shooting fireworks in the plaza in front of where we live and they shot right over us  so that we could feel the rubble landing on us. So that was fun. And a lot of other stuff has happened. It was just a super spiritual uplifting week. Also changes happened the other week so we have two new people in the office. They are Elder Araújo From Joao Pessoa, Brasil, And Elder Holland from North Carolina. But also Utah as well.
So happy New year and I will see you next week.

La Navidad

Hey everybody,
Well we are getting really excited for the Navidad here. At least I am. And also everybody I live with. And also the assistants who I don't live with. And the shopping malls. And I think most of the missionaries as well. This week was pretty cool. First off we got the oros this week. I love receiving the new missionaries and seeing what their first reactions are. It is great. You would think that they would have researched more about Uruguay but usually they haven't. For example they are often surprised about the way people here look. Like one of the missionaries this time was really surprised that the guy doing his medical exam was a ginger, but there are a lot of gingers here in Montevideo. And they always have a lot of funny questions.
We also had the mission Christmas conferences this week. There were two with half of the mission at a time. Us oficinistas prepared an accapella  rendition of silent night and it turned out really well.
And we taught a bunch of investigators as well.
In order to not feel sad about being away from home on Christmas here is a list of things I am grateful for about Uruguay.

1 Uruguayos
2 Yerba Mate
3 Guachos and their epic clothing
4 Asado
5 Besitos
6 Dulce de Leche
7 The beautiful landscape
8 The weird accent
9 Being super tranquilo
10 The fact that a nice date can consist of sitting in a plaza, drinking mate, eating a few biscochos, and maybe kissing a little bit with no more than a hundred pesitos spent.
11 The birds
12 The fact that all conversations end up going for the branches
13 La Noche de Nostalgia
14 Salus
15 Alfajores
16 That you can say Adios mijo, and it means hello

Good now I feel less homesick.

So it is Christmas time and that means that we should talk about Jesus. I had a spiritual breakthrough this week. We were in the Christmas conference and President Eddy made somethings clear to me that I hadn't Understood before. I used to think that when Christ said that " Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of the my brethren ye have done it unto me it was because when we do nice things He approves and when we do bad things He disapproves. But then I realized that when we alleviate somebodies suffering or that when we avoid sin it has a direct affect on Christs atonement. The atonement wasn't something that happened and ya está, it is something that is eternal and always present. When we do something to someone else we are literally doing it to him. It is mind blowing to think about. So this Christmas season let us resolve to be more like the Savior and not stop in our spiritual development.

I love you guys, Have a very excellent Christmas.
Un Beso,
Elder Christensen.

Oh and also I started driving a little bit this week. I thought it would be weird but it ended up feeling very normal.

Change week

Hey y'all whats up,
So this was a super full week and tons of stuff happened that I could write about but i will just mention a few highlights. First of all I just want to say that even though we don't always have a ton of time to go out and proselyte the Lord blesses the time we do have. So last weekend we went out and we found this new couple to teach named Gladys and Ruben and just let me tell you they are some of the best investigators ever. Over the course of the week we had several charlas with them including in the chapel and they came all dressed up and are super excited to come to church this tomorrow.
Also we decided to go into El Cante del Medio, which is this part of our area that we had never been before and we found this guy named fabian who lives in a black can and is very addicted to tobacco. We taught him some stuff in the front of his van while smoke from a pile of burning trash blew in and a bunch of little kids piled in to the back of the van to listen  to us. It was awesome. We set a goal for him to not smoke at all during our next lesson becasue he literally can't go five seconds without lighting a cigarrette. Then after our lesson he gave us a reference to a family called Vique that lives down the street. So we went over there and it turns out that they have 14 children and we taught a bunch of them and they all want to get baptized. The only problem is that the visiting days for the two oldest children in prison are on sunday so it makes it hard for the parents to come to church with us.

Also there is a church travel black out during the week of Christmas because travel is so expensive so changes are weird this time around. We already sent the valientes home on friday a week early. So on thursday we were in the offices getting everything ready and I got a call from one of our investigators named María. She and her husband Alberto are just a super cute little old couple that love having us over. So asks " ¿Dónde andan ustedes? and I was like " Estamos acá en la capilla." And she said "Bueno, vengan que les hice una torta de naranja". We went over after the baptismal interview for the financiers and ate the very best cake I have ever had in uruguay (Cake isn't very good here. Don't tell anyone I said that.") and taught about the importance of sabath day worship. It was beautiful.

Talk to you maybe on Christmas or maybe some other time,
Elder Christensen

Yup

Hey Everybody,
Well I can't really remember much of what happened this week, because it all seems like a blur. Here are some highlights. I administered English tests to the Latino missionaries who are leaving this week and want to get certified. We had interviews with President Eddy that ended up taking most of the day and were followed by very short two hour intercambios with the zone leaders. We got the report back from the church on baptisms and confirmations for the month of December and their were some really weird discrepancies between their records and ours, because they included some people as having been baptized that weren't and we have no Idea why so we are trying to get that figured out. Also one of the girlfriends of one of the missionaries sent him an enormous package through DHL and whenever that happens we have to go get it out of customs which took two hours and they opened it up and it was just full of candy and children's toys and gift wrap. And all of the other people in line were chuckling. We felt slightly embarrassed. So please don't send packages to your missionaries through DHL or Fedex.
And yeah there was just a bunch of stuff preventing us from working in our area this week which was super frustrating, but I am sure that next week will be better.
Also I think my brother Seth has a birthday this week so if you see him please say Happy birthday at him.

Hi

Opa,
Well it has been quite a long time since the last pday we had and everybody in the offices was getting pretty stressed out and desperate, and we also ran out of food in the house because it has been a while since we last went shopping, but I have still managed to gain a lot of wait. Speaking of that I have been able to go running for like the first time in my mission, which is really great. I switch off every morning with Manzanares and Newman, and we get to run down to the Rambla and see the Ocean which is nice. It has been a Year and a half since I last went running and my body is pretty much basura, but my lungs are still in better condition than either of thiers, so thank you cross country coaches.
So Yeah we had thanks giving dinner at the Eddy home and it was super great because their was pie but it had nada que ver with Greg Christensen pie, although I am still greatfull so don't worry.
And yeah we have had a ton of success in our area the last weekishness and we found a family who was taught by the missionaries over six months ago and are now prepared and dead set ont getting themselves baptized so we are really excited for them, and Our Investigator Carolina is making a lot of progress and really seeing the effects of the spirit in he life, although her boyfreinds, husband we're not sure whats veiwing days have been on sundays the last couple of weeks so she hasn't been able to come to church.
Also one of my investigators back in ferrocarril named Yanaina got baptized last sunday so we got to go becuase she was actually one of Elder Manzanres investigators too because he was trained their many months ago. Anyway she this sweet girl who was finally able to get baptized because she moved in full time with her dad and his wife. So her dad is this cool guy who is a convert of a couple years and he baptized her, and it was definitley the most spiritual baptism I have ever been to. Afterwards she bore her testimony about how after being baptized she felt super light like all of her sins had been lifted away. I saw Elder Helske. He is doing great. He is with Elder Souza who Elder Newman actually trained and they are taking great care of the area.
So Fun story. I don't know if you guys have heard about this Christmas service program called Ilumina el Mundo where you do something serviceable every day of the month, but the mission is getting all of the missionaries to do big multiperson service activities, and they had T shirts made for it. So the T shirt people were slow and didn't get them done until yesterday morning which was the same day we needed them, so Yesterday we spent the whole day with the assistants driving out to the zones close to Montevideo to deliver them. So we had gone out to the city of Las Piedras (The Stones!) And we were driving back and were in the middle of nowhere going pretty fast when all of a sudden Elder Mecham drives the front right wheel over an enourmous pothole. And then It started making funny noises so we stopped and discovered that we had a flat and were out in the wilderness alone. So we decided we needed to find some help and started pulling away when (and I am really proud of this) I said "Wait! before we destroy the rim lets see if there is a spare in the trunk." So we looked and lo and behold a spare with all of the tools to change it. So we jacked up the car and changed the tire, and Elder Manzanares almost got his arm broken off because Elder Mecham forgot to turn on the parking brake, and it was a lot of fun. So I don't remember if it was Brother Gosnell, Brother Brady, Brother Taylor-Jones, or Brother Haus or who that taught me how to change a tire in that one youth activity, but whoever it was thank you.

See y'all next week,
Elder Christensen

¡Feliz día del pavo!

Hey everybody,
Well I am writing on thursday today because it is thanksgiving so president Eddy had us change our p day so we could do thanksgiving things. Elder Bazaes is kind of confused about why but I think he is happy to celebrate anywho. So yeah this morning we went and played flag football at the american school with The Eddy family, and the President and office elders from the other mission. I think it was the first time I have ever played an actual game of football of anysort, but it was pretty fun even though I'm not very good at sportsball. Sorry Dad. Then at 1:30 we are going to eat a traditional thanksgiving dinner with that same people. It will even include a real actual pavo. That is crazy because most people here have never eaten pavo because you can only get it in the tienda inglesa, which is like a fancy super market of imported products, and I think pavo sells at like 50 dollars a bird, which if I remember right is over thirty dollars more expensive than in the states. But I am most excited for the pie and cranny berry relish. I miss pie. And cran berry relish. But especially sweet potatoes.
So we are also super excited about our area. This week we found a cute little old couple named María and Alberto who are very special because they were super excited to receive us, they actually understood what we taught, and they agreed to be baptized. We are going back today and they said they were going to make us a cake, so I hope I have room. We also found a kid named mateo to teach who is really interested in religion, and a young family composed of Nicolás and Kati, and their tiny baby Morena. They also agreed to be baptized, and we are feeling super excited because even though we have limited time to proselyte we are finding a ton of people to teach which is great, because we didn't have very many. Although I feel like we could find a lot more if we would go into the sketchy parts of our area, because we have been staying almost entirely in the nicer part that is closer to where we live. So we will see what happens.

Week Two Offices

Hey Everybody how's it going?
Well yeah so I have just been here doing some stuff trying to get used to being in the mission Offices. So here is how it works. Basically we leave the house at ten like normal and walk over to the offices, which is a tiny complex pegged on to the local church building. While there I spend my time ingresing the many many baptismal registries we receive through emails or hard copies into the churches sistem. I also organize mail. All of the Christmas packages started coming in so it is getting crazy. Then there is a bunch of other stuff I am supposed to do that I am not really sure what it is yet or how to do it or how to use a computer. And yeah. Then we leave every day at five to go proselyte. So we share the Malvín ward with the financiers, and they proselyte in the geographical area of Malvín sur which a bunch of wealthy homes and beach front condominiums south of the avenida Italia, and we proselyte in the area of Malvín norte which is mostly a bunch of cantegrillas and low income apartments. So we don't usually leave with anything more than books, but is more interesting that way.
But some cool things have been going on in our area, like we recently were able to start teaching a woman named carolina. She has been coming to church for the last five weeks with her suegra but we weren't able to teach her until this week. She is very interested in learning more about the gospel, and she is super sensitive to the spirit and says she has seen a ton of changes in her life and the way she feels ever since she started coming to church.
Also we met a guy yesterday named Ricardo who was very drunk and also very convinced that people with type A blood our descended from chimpanzees and people with type B blood are descended from gorillas. But he had a copy of El Libro de Mormón from the 80's which was cool.
Then we also have to do Mission chores sometimes. Like on monday all six of the office elders went over the the apartment of the wankiers, who are a senior missionary couple that just went home, and move everything out so that the apartment could be closed on. What happened is that it was a large seventh story apartment full of stuff from years of missionary couples living there, and we had to get everything down this tiny little old timey elevator into the tiny little basement parking garage, and make trips back and forth to the offices using only the tiny little trailer hooked up to the mission van. So we were there from six until midnight. But it was all okay because we got to call for midnight pizza afterwards.
I think one of my favorite things about uruguay is that there are just horses everywhere, even right in the middle of the city. Every patch of grass usually has a little horse tied to it. People use them to pull carts for collecting recycleables. I think that is one of the things that helps me not to feel super claustrophobic after so many months of living in Montevideo.
Well Thanks for listening guys, see you on thursday.

Week one malvín [from November 6, 2017]

Hey everbody,
so I just finished leaving my old area. It was pretty sad. Also I got called to be one of the mission secretaries, which basically means that I am a glorified mailman except that I always thought that mail personal were pretty cool. We are in the week of changes so it is really crazy especially since we have this member of the presiding bishopric coming on wednesday to give a conference to both of the missions. Apparently he served in uruguay hace añares. So I am just sitting here in the mission offices trying to be useful and mostly just being really confused. But that is how I have felt for most of my life anyway so it is okay. SO I will let y'all know more on saturday which is my pday from now on.

week one offices

Hey everybody,
So I am here in the offices typing an email. It is pretty great. Yeah so what happened is that on sunday they picked me up on sunday and then on monday we had to pack our bags to go stay in the hostal by the temple and then spent the next few days picking up and processing new missionaries, getting rid of old ones and getting everybody changed to their new areas. It was actually pretty weird and crazy this time, because, Elder Davies from the presiding bishoprik came to speak to both of the missions on the same day as changes. It was also sad becasue we sent some of my best friends on the mission home, like Elder Palomino and Elder Espínola. And I havn't been able to fo to my proselyting area yet so that is kind of killing me. And In my old Area Elder Souza from Brazil land took my place, so now Elder Helske is going to be forced to speak only spanish or Portuguese, which makes me really really happy.
So yeah see you next week.

Only one more week to go here guys

Yup,
Well Anther week has come and gone. I only have one more week to be here in Ferrocarril, so I need to start packing, but I know that not everything I have will fit into my suitcases so I need to find someting heavy to press it down. We didn't actually have a lot of time to work in our area this week. First I had divisions with Elder Araùjo in his area. He was excited because District leader Espìnola is broken and can't proselyte very much. He also taught me some more Portuguès. Then we had divisions with the zone leaders in their area. I went with Elder Lockhart, and it was weird because it was like being an oro again except I could actually contribute. THen we had a service project all day with the whole stake on saturday. So yeah.
We had some chill milagritos though. Our investigators Daniel has a teenage son named sebastian who was totally not interested in the church because the uruguayo youth thinks that churches are strange. But then he sat in on a lesson we were haveing, and we found out later that He went to the youth activities at the church and wanted to come on sunday and learn more. Which was super cool. But then Daniel and his Pareja Alejandra had an argument on saturday night so they didn't come the next morning, which figures. But still super cool!
We are also teaching this girl that for some reason we call Marìa but everybody else calls by her other name Yanila. Her dad and her dad's wife are active members, and she recently moved in with them, and has been taught by anterior missionaries, and wants to be baptized in a couple of weeks which will be super cool.
Some other details from my life. So a couple of weeks ago somebody sacrificed a couple of chickens and some popcorn and potatoes on a street corner near our house, which wasn't really a problem, except that the chickens got pulled into the street by dogs, and repeatedly run over, so now there are a couple of smelly squished chickenysmears that we have to walk past everday.
One of the things that we have to do as missionaries is shave everyday, except that on mondays I don't like to shave until the tardecita when we go out to proselyte. However before coming to the cyber today I went into the bathroom and saw my face in the mirror, and the Holy spirit said " Elder Christensen You got to shave" And I said, " No its okay" and then the spirit said "Afeitate" and I said "No, no quiero" and left the room. Then I went back and shaved and the spirit was content, and I am content because the spirit is content. So seguid el espìritu pues.
Also we were walking down the street today and I little girl asked  us something and I didn't understand because I wasn't listening, but I realized she wanted help, so she led us down the street to where a lady was reaching into a big green dumpster. So the lady told us that they were passing the dumpster and heard it make noise and asked us if we could get it out. So we lookid in the dumpster and there was a little baby puppy crying. SO we got it out. Somebody threw away a puppy man. Not cool.
Besitos,
Elder Christensen

Baptism, Not just a mythical occurence.

Hey Everybody!

Well I subject my email like that because we finally got to help somebody get baptized here. His name is Hernàn and he is a niño of once años. Elder helske and I were praying and fasting last change that we would be able to have that experience, and he just kind of showed up although it is a sad story. His dad died a few weeks ago in an auto accident, and his granpa, Julio showed up at church and started taking him. Julio has beleived that the church is true since the 70's but has never been able to get baptized because his wife is super atheist, and won't let him. But we have been working with Hernàn, and he decided to bautizarse. He is a really quiet, intelligent kid that reminds me of my brother Micah. Probably my favorite niño after my brothers. But we have been working a lot with the ward and president Eddy to make sure he gets all of the support he needs to have success as an active member which has been great. But we were mostly dealing with that all week so we didn't get much other stuff done.
We also went over to the area of La Paz to help the hermanas ( which I guess in english is probably sister missionaries) With a fun service project for one of there recent converts who has Parkinsons. We besically just tore sheet metal off of his roof and took out the old rotting planks so he can put a new roof on. But the thing is that winter has gone so i got a sweet t-shirt burn.
And yeah, Other than that our new director de la obra misional Josè Marìa Rodriguez and his wife Yolanda are fantastic. They are super hard working and organized the whole baptizmal service for us. Also we are having ward council regularly again, so I am really happy not to be doing everything on our own anymore.
Here is a joke. What is the difference between una vaca argentina y una vaca uruguaya? ¡La vaca argentina da leche, y la vaca uruguaya dale che! Love that one.
Creyendo a mi manera,
Elder Christensen

1) This is Hernàn with Manuel Sandes who baptized him. The sandes family is acting as his surrogate family in the ward for now.

2) One of the members from La Paz let me hold her pet rat after the service project. One of many small blessings we experience daily.

3) There is nothing to do around here so we went to drink mate with the zone leaders and have an asadito this morning. This is elder paulson. He is from salt lake city. He is weird. But so is elder Lockhart so they get along great.

13 months

Hey everybody,
Well It was one of those weeks where it seems like we did a lot and nothing really happened. Except we did discover that one of our investigators is a false prophet. He is over 80 years old likes to sing tango, and has a plane ticket to rome for the 31st of this month because God personally told him to go talk to the pope and reform the catholic church. Apparently he is going to be able to understand italian and the vatican police wont be able to touch because of the power that he has been filled with. Although papa francisco is from Buenos Aires so I am sure that they will enjoy speaking castellano to each other, viste. He also has an urugauya flag that he is going to gift to Francisco, because apparently Dios es uruguayo. I was feeling kind of down and without energy before that experience, but then afterward I felt super excited to go talk to as many urugayos as possible about the gospel as I could, becuse they are the best. Elder Helske had the opposite experience, and got pretty down and sad that everyone we meet or care about is crazy. He is a sweet kid.
Also Elder Araùjo gave me A Sagrada BÌblia, which is like is like La Santa Biblia but written in portuguese and a lot sillier to read. Definitley the best gift any missionary has given me.
The church is true, repentance works, analize the scriptures and pray daily to receive the holy spirit.
Love,
Elder Chris

I can't really remember what week it is. If someone could do the math and let me know that would be great.

Hey everybody,
How's it been going? Well,I hope. I have been hanging in pretty well. We had a good week this week. We found some cool new investigators. one is named Nacho. He mostly cuts hair and plays soccer. I have gotten a lot better at soccer. I suppose I would call it a blessing, but I am still really bad. We also got to do some cool service projects this week. My favorite was when we went and move a bunch a logs into a burn pile for some church members that had cut down a tree. It reminded me of home. I always really liked stacking firewood. We had a conference with president eddy. That was also very helpful.
We also ran into an american. We just sat by these kids and started talking to them about some basic gospel principles. Then some of there friens came and they pointed out one who they said speaks english. So we started talking to him, but my brain was confused so I kept switching between languages on accident. His name was kevin from georgia, but he has lived in Uruguay for the last seven years so he kind of talks like a robot. Don't tell him I said that though. It is always fun to run into americans.
So yeah thanks for listening,
Elder Christensen

Yo

Hey everyone how is it going? It has been a pretty good couple of weeks. We have had some interesting stuff go down. First of all changes went down. Elder Vera got upped to district leader, but not my district leader, so I can just treat him like normal, so only a tiny change in the house politics. The best thing is that my dad Elder Lockhart got transfered here to be our zone leader which is pretty great. Although I think he is mad at me for forgetting to call him on his birthday that one time. And yeah.
Last sunday we had an investigator that we found by our own initiative come to church. His name is Nestor. He is this old secretly rich catholic guy that has a super cool army bike from the fifties with a side car. Elder Helske really likes motorcycles. He came to the first two hours of sunday school and then cut out before sacrament meeting becasue it had been three weeks since he went to the Misa and he couldn't miss. Which was pretty funny.
Elder Helske has a personal debit card. He went to the ATM to get some money. For reasons unknown the machine ate his card. So later when the bank was open we went to try to get it back. We went in and sat down and the strangest feeling came over me. It was like all this responsibility lifted of my shoulders and all I had to do was sit in a comfortable chair in a climate controled environment and listen to pleasant ringing sounds as I let other people take care of things I had absolutely no control over. I kind of hope it happens again so we can go back.
We also got to go to general conference. General conference was excellent. The first session on saturday answered a lot of questions I had about things and stuff. I am really grateful for the opportunity we have to listen to living prophets. we listened in the stake center. I was really struck by something this one leader guy said, which being translated, says something like " Love without service is like faith wihtout works. Dead."
Keep it real
Besitos

Two laps down, two more to go.

Hiya folks,
Well I wasn't actually going to mention this but it was fun so now I have to. I finished a year this week. I was planning on ignoring it and just pretending it was a normal day, but Elder Helske is the best so he mad us go to the super market so he could buy a bunch of stuff, and then we celebrated with Toddy time, Mate celestial, and a ton of alfajores con leche. I felt really full. Elder Helske is the best.
We also got to go to the temple last tuesday. I really like going to the temple. It is a good place to seek revelation. We were taking the G La Paz bus back from the temple wich takes a really long time. When we got off we walked a little of the ways toward home and I realized that I did not have our phone. It slid out of my pocket on the bus. A phone is really important in our daily routine. That night when the Colòn elders got home we used their phone to call our phone. A guy answered claiming to be Estèfano who told us to meet him in the morning in the plaza de colòn. I thought he sounded Just like our zone leader Elder Paulson, wich was really confusing because we weren't on the bus with them. So in the morning we went the plaza and Elder Paulson and Elder Jones showed up. Then a guy selling key chains came up and started bible bashing us. Then they gave us our phone, except they had dropped and broken it. So we went without a phone for a few days. Then at the conference for new missionaries they gave us a newer nicer one.

I also got to use my new found soccer skills to start teaching four new investigators in the street. What's even better is that the brother of one of them was there and is already a member although less active. So we are going to be working a lot with them.
